This past Tuesday, Nov. 15, Hub101 hosted their second in-house demo day. Over the course of 12 weeks, nine teams built their companies from the ground up out of the space with the help of Hub101 Program Manager Daniel Ball and over 500 mentor hours.
The nine companies that pitched, in order listed, were:
1. My Golf Faves: An app that allows golfers to receive discounted green fees from selected golf courses. It would allow golf courses to fill more of their tee time slots and target specific demographics with discounts.
2. Nesting Up: A service helping home buyers create custom cover letters utilizing photographs in hopes of creating a personal connection with the sellers.
3. Urban Tech Expert: This service creates a database with zoned building codes for all of Los Angeles. Clients would be able to look up the development requirements in each area to find ideal building locations.
4. Shesaurus: Originally starting as a gender-term-based dictionary, this website, similar to Urban Dictionary, defines all terms and does not shy away from taboo/slang topics.
5. ProtectBox: A consultation service providing compliant and all-encompassing cyber security for small to medium-sized businesses.
6. UADisplay: An advertising/marketing company that utilizes modern unmanned drone technology to maximize digital signage viewership.
7. Hoop Stop: With the motto “who wants to play ball,” this app allows basketball players to meet up for games close to them at available gyms.
8. Allele: A service allowing customers to discover/interpret their nutritional deficiencies through third-party genetic tests. The company also develops a personal vitamin supplement regimen based on the individual genetic results of each customer.
9. Acorn Design: A revolutionary new accessory in women’s fashion, Acorn Design makes unique compartmentalized women’s handbags. Each compartment are designed for specific handbag essentials in convenient locations.
Judging the pitches (11 minutes total for pitch and judge Q&A) was Blake Baxter from BlackRunVentures, Executive Director of the Center for Entrepreneurship Mike Panesis, Wes Bancroft from Peate Ventures, Noramay Cadena from MakeInLA and founder of 805 Startups Alon Goren.
After a brief deliberation, the judges decided third place would go to Acorn Design, second to Shesaurus and first place to Hoop Stop. All companies were awarded with one year of free coworking at Hub101. The startups also made numerous connections to other team members and potential investors through community networking.
