Thousand Oaks, CA – As part of National Start-Up Day, Congresswoman Julia Brownley (D-Westlake Village) met with local entrepreneurs and start-ups in Ventura County yesterday. Congresswoman Brownley met with small business owners to discuss and better understand the challenges new companies in Ventura County face, and the ways to create a stronger business environment to help these companies flourish in the region.

“Start-ups are vital to our local economy. They are innovative and adaptive, constantly providing fresh ideas, new jobs, and contributing significantly to our community’s economic growth,” said Congresswoman Brownley. “Each year, start-up companies create more than 2 million jobs nationwide, fostering hard work, creativity, and passion. I am proud to support local starts-ups and small businesses that help strengthen our economy and our region as a whole.”

Congresswoman Brownley toured the following start-ups:

  • Sugar Lab Bake Shop – A made-to-order bake shop started in 2012 by mother-daughter duo, Kelly Shirk and Alison Davis, which specializes in custom cakes and scratch-made desserts. In May of 2016, they moved to their current location in the Victoria Plaza in Ventura, which has a larger shop with more desserts available on a daily basis.

  • Hub101 – Cal Lutheran’s local start-up incubator which offers co-working, community, and mentorship for entrepreneurs and small business owners looking to start or grow their business. Hub 101 provides resources, services, and assistance to help start-ups grow every step of the way.

“We’ve seen and helped entrepreneurs here in Ventura County take their ideas and turn them into impactful businesses – companies that address pressing needs and issues from bettering the quality of education to improving healthcare delivery to revolutionizing the way we provide services to people around the world. Ventura County has tremendous potential and continues to be a robust center of innovation, something Cal Lutheran University contributes immensely towards through its support of Hub101. Every day at Hub101, we are working towards fostering that growth,” said Greg Monterrosa, Community Relations Manager at Hub101.

Brownley introduced the Start Up In A Day Act (H.R. 251) to help entrepreneurs more easily start their ventures by permanently authorizing a Small Business Administration initiative that streamlines the licensing and permit process to open a new business at the local level.
