DISCOVERING YOUR PASSION BY ROSE SOILAND

I’ve met countless people who are interested in so many subjects that they can’t decide on a college major. In some cases, students can’t choose a major because their skills and interests elude them.

Unfortunately, a number of people end up choosing those practical careers they don’t enjoy and they walk through life waiting for their next break. And waiting. And waiting. Sometimes it never comes. Wouldn’t it be a dream to love your job?

My mom once articulated to me how rare it is and how lucky people are who get to do what they love for a living. This sentiment has since driven me to find what I love doing and to pursue it, something few can afford. I find what I love by exploring what’s out there.

So let’s talk about how important it is to get connected and involved with various ventures to really discover your passion. The more you learn about the world and what’s in it the better prepared you will be when it comes time to choose a major or a career.

College is a great way to decide what you enjoy doing. Taking classes, joining clubs and attending events (even off campus) widens your horizons to get thinking about what inspires you. So does reading about a wide range of subjects. You could read literature, or you could choose popular magazines. Then analyze how (insert your passion here) aligns with goals you have set for yourself.

For example, I love psychology, but I can’t see myself doing anything practical with that and I want a practical degree. So why not mix psychology with business? Marketing. BAM!

No one can tell you what you’re passionate about. I surveyed a few of my fellow peers and found that we’re all different. We all have our own passions. One person said they were passionate about shrinking the wage gap, another said education. I heard fashion and swimming. Ben Kuo, founder of SocalTech.com , professed that he’s passionate about technology and venture capital. A Do'er here at Hub101 named protecting human rights and preventing child labor as her passions.

My personal arsenal of interests range from politics and theories on birth order to reading history and sci fi-fantasy novels. But my real passion is for ending modern day slavery: sex trafficking. I became interested in this a couple years ago when a friend of mine moved to the Czech Republic to help girls out of prostitution and I’ve been passionate about it ever since. So I decided that I can apply my marketing degree to campaign against slavery, which would be a dream come true! It’s all in your hands whether you choose a path that leads to joy in the workplace or slogging through the day. I find that applying your existing skills to your interests is the best way to find your passion.

A crazy number of people end up indifferent about their jobs. SCARY! But a sure way to avoid that prosaic lifestyle is to pop your comfort zone and try something new. While you’re at it, join my Ballroom Dance Club!
